Deacon Fred Eckhardt
Fred was raised in the community of Dormont. He is the youngest of three children born to Fred and Grace Eckhardt. Fred has two older sisters, Lois and Marilyn, who both still live in the Pittsburgh region with their families. Fred attended St. Bernard Elementary School, South Hills Catholic H.S. and Duquesne University. He graduated from Duquesne with a degree in Secondary Education and a Masters in Guidance and Counseling. He taught Social Studies for thirty four years, thirty three of those at Carrick High School, a Pittsburgh Public School. In addition, he served as a volunteer firefighter for twenty years.
Fred says he is most blessed to be married to his lovely bride, Sue Ann. Fred and Sue Ann have four grown children, Jennifer, James, Kathleen and Andrew.
Soon after retirement, Fred heard of the formation of a new Permanent Diaconate class. After much prayer and encouraged by his family and former pastor, Father David Driesch, he applied for and was accepted into the program. As a class, they studied for five and a half years. Fred was ordained a Permanent Deacon by Bishop Zubik on June 11, 2011. As a member of the clergy, in a word, the ministry of the Deacon is one of service.St. Bernard's is Fred’s first assignment and considers it “his great honor and privilege to serve here since ordination.”
